Kadınlarla Mor Dizi / Purple Series
First they said, “We deserve it”, then they said “We can attain it”. And now they are saying, “This is our right!” First they changed themselves, then they changed those around them. Listen to the stories of strong women who became aware of their rights and changed their lives…
The Purple Series TV series was produced as an alternative to the “victimized”, “oppressed” woman image we often encounter in the media, and also as a visual training material by Women for Women’s Human Rights (WWHR) – New Ways and the national TV news station NTV in 2006. It was aired on NTV the same year and on local TV stations in various cities of Turkey afterwards.
The 12 episode Purple Series is a documentary series based on the countless stories of how women are able to exercise their rights in different spheres of their lives through Human Rights Training Program for Women (HREP), and also provides basic key information on women’s human rights and the legal framework in Turkey in an accessible manner. It is inspired by the positive feedback from trainers and participants of HREP, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary as of 2014, and is one of the most comprehensive and widespread human rights training programs worldwide. In the documentary, women participating in HREP share their remarkable stories of positive change and HREP trainers convey their experiences of the transformative impact of the program on women and their families and communities.
Comprised of interviews with HREP participants, shootings from HREP training workshops, and interviews with trainers, the WWHR-New Ways team, and experts in relevant fields, the Purple Series invites you to share the stories of women who have realized gender equality in their lives through transforming themselves and their surroundings. Based on HREP modules, each episode of the documentary focuses on one theme: women’s human rights; civil rights; violence against women; strategies against violence; economic rights (2 episodes); women and sexuality and sexual rights; gender sensitive parenting; reproductive rights; women and politics; women’s grassroots organizing; feminism and the women’s movement. Including stories of women from different cities such as Ankara, Çanakkale, İstanbul, Van, the Purple Series portrays HREP participants who begin to work outside the home including in “unconventional” occupations such as city bus drivers, women who go back to school to continue their education, establish more equal and satisfactory relations with their husbands and families, claim their sexual and bodily autonomy, stop violence, get elected as local officials, and organize around their own needs.
In order to increase public interest, each episode features opening and closing statements on women’s human rights by highly acclaimed women celebrities (popular women actors, writers, musicians etc.) such as Ayşe Kulin, Derya Baykal, Ece Uslu, Gülben Ergen, Gülriz Sururi, Hülya Koçyiğit, Türkan Şoray, Zeynep Oral.
The Purple Series has reached thousands of women to date, and three episodes are also available with English subtitles. Currently, WWHR-New Ways is translating the entire series into Kurdish. Bearing in mind the lower literacy levels of Kurdish women, the series will be dubbed, which will provide a unique resource on women’s human rights for Kurdish women in Turkey. We are continuing our efforts to expand the series’ outreach and use it as a training material and look forward to any suggestions or contributions to this end…
