This law, publicly known as the Protection Order aims to remove women who are subjected to domestic violence from the threat of violence immediately and in the safest possible manner. To this end, the person instigating the violence is removed through legal means from areas of common habitation and labor. Thanks to this law, Turkish women now have a readily available effective legal mechanism to which they can resort to take swift measures in the face of domestic violence.
As a result of our joint struggle with other women’s organizations, Parliament ratified the law against domestic violence in 1998.
The struggle against domestic violence was voiced through feminist activism at street demonstrations and shelters and succeeded in affecting this legislative change and government policies. To accomplish this, we conducted research and published literature on the subject of violence against women and we used these materials in press campaigns and to lobby members of Parliament and the Justice Commission responsible for passing the law. These efforts provided a catalyst for transforming the movement’s aims into legislative changes.
